Who Are Science Fair Kids?

TOM KULAS

Tom Kulas is retired from Xcel Energy in Minneapolis.  His last position prior to retirement was as “Principal Distribution Engineer”, a position he held for approximately 10 years.

Tom participated in his Regional Science Fair in Rochester in 1959, presenting a demonstration of the capabilities of various types of soil to retain water, provide aeration capabilities, demonstrate potential to support plant growth, demonstrate what additional items were required to sustain growth, and demonstrate how crop rotation was beneficial to a healthy soil base.

“I learned the principles of providing proper documentation for scientific research and more importantly, the need to provide proper documentation to effectively communicate any scientific knowledge to others,” says Tom.   “Because of my 35 year career in engineering and science, I very much want to get involved in working with younger people and help them to understand the need for an expertise in the areas of math, science and reporting.”

In retirement, Tom is making good on his promise to work with young people by serving as a Judge in the Engineering Project Category at this year’s State Science Fair in Duluth.
