Who Are Science Fair Kids?

Elizabeth Welsh

Elizabeth Welsh is currently a sophomore at Proctor High School in Proctor, Minnesota and plans to go to college, possibly majoring in Physical Therapy, Social Work or Counseling.  She started in Science Fairs in 7th grade and has participated every year since.  This year, Elizabeth will present her fourth project.  Her four projects have built on each other throughout her years of study and have focused on the impact of barley on water quality.

“Science fair has helped me become more confident in my presenting and speaking skills,” says Elizabeth.  “It has made it easier for me to give speeches.  I feel more comfortable in new situations and I have been able to meet people from all over the word.  My project has affected others because I informed the local feed bin about my project three years ago.  They now carry barley straw for people with ponds.”

Elizabeth has had impressive success in Science Fair competition, making it to the State Science Fair each of the four years with her projects and to the state finals in paper competition in 8th and 9th grade.  She was an alternate to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in 2002, and will represent Minnesota at the National Symposium in Colorado Springs in May of 2003.  And, Elizabeth will be competing as a regional finalist at ISEF in Cleveland, Ohio in May of 2003!
