St. Paul Central High School 2012 Science Bowl Champion

Will compete in National Finals in Washington, D.C.

 

St. Paul, MN – St. Paul Central High School defeated Stillwater Area High School to win the championship of Minnesota Academy of Science’s Minnesota State Regional Science Bowl for High School Students at Macalester College on January 20.  The St. Paul Central High School team won a team trophy, individual medals and will represent Minnesota in the upcoming Department of Energy National Science Bowl, April 26-30, 2012 in Washington, D.C. 

 

Competing for St. Paul Central High School were Max Timmons, Do Park, Michael Tsuei, Brian Petkov, and Sam Khodursky.  The team was coached by Kathleen Havelin

 

Stillwater Area High School was represented by Andrew Ylitalo, Eric Eitzman, Peter Fleischman, Rayhan Munir, and Mitchell Kluesner.  The team was coached by Caroline Ylitalo.

 

A total of 160 students from 32 teams representing 20 schools participated in the tournament.   Teams spent months preparing for the event that features head-to-head competition in a fast-paced question and answer format similar to the TV show, Jeopardy. The students were quizzed on questions in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Energy, Mathematics and Physics. 

 

The schools that participated include: The Blake School-Hopkins, Burnsville High School, Cathedral High School-New Ulm, Chanhassen High School, Chaska High School, Math & Science Academy-St. Paul, Minnetonka High School, Oak Land Junior High School-Stillwater, Roseville Area High School, Springfield High School, St. Anthony Village High School, St. John’s Preparatory School-Collegeville, St. Paul Academy & Summit School, St. Paul Central High School, St. Paul Harding High School, Stillwater Area High School, Twin Cities Academy-St. Paul, View Squared Science Club-Southeast Metro, Wayzata High School, and Woodbury High School.

 

Congratulations to Woodbury High School for winning the Civility Award for their excellent sportsmanship.  

 

The Minnesota State Regional Science Bowl for High School Students is a program of the Minnesota Academy of Science.  The Minnesota Academy of Science supports Minnesota scientists at every stage of their development, providing a vital forum for scientific inquiry and discussion that reaches thousands of Minnesotans annually.  The event was sponsored by generous contributions from Ecolab, General Mills, Great River Energy, Pentair and Macalester College.
